The battle would be the longest and one of the deadliest in the great war. The french would take the opportunity and launch a massive counter-attack, retaking Fort Vaux and Fort Douaumont and the banks, erasing the german gains and greatly defeated german capacity. However the germans would exhaust their strength and with the British launching the Battle of the Somme, divert attention else where. With the battle changing wind, the germans would launch an all out attack, with their forces capturing and defeating the fiercely defended, Fort Vaux. More and more frenchman would be sent to the fields to reinforce the developments, resulting in the germans expanding the battle by moving to the west bank of Meuse. The attack would ensue on the 21st of February, with the siege and capture of Fort Douaumont.
#Verdun battle series
In the wake of the Second Battle of Champagne, the germans devised a ploy to bleed the french, by capturing the Meuse heights which overlook the Région Fortifiée de Verdun (RFV), a series of forts and batteries which oversaw the german border. E4 is shadowed by the hill but not on it, so it will usually be hard to get to the point because of the amount of French snipers on the hill, but there are usually not many French on the point itself, making it easy to capture. E3 is on the hill, giving high ground for France and excellent positions for snipers. The other hard point to capture is E3 and sometimes E4. However, one E5 is captured, it is usually easy rolling the rest of the way for Germany. The fifth is inside Fort Vaux.Į5 is usually the hardest to capture due to being many houses nearby, which offer good camping spots and a haven for snipers. The third is on a hill with many pre-made trenches and artillery craters. The second CP is at the far end of the village. The first Capture Point (CP) is in the middle of the village. The game starts with France holding Capture Points E1, E2, E3, E4, and E5. The Battle of Verdun has been long has been teased since 18th November a picture revealed the unfinished map with a large snail model placed next to it. The Battle of Verdun is well known in the game for being the first map with Conquest as its Gamemode. The Battle of Verdun starts in a random French village which leads all the way to Fort Vaux as the Germans begin to capture points. It is the first Conquest map in the game, with Germany attacking and France defending. Many unexploded shells (maybe 12 million) still remain. To this day, the battlefield is still cratered and pockmarks.
Also the number killed per square mile was the greatest at Verdun. Although more men died at the Somme, the proportion of casualties suffered to the number of men who fought was much higher at Verdun than at any other battle in World War I. Half of Frenchmen between 20 and 30 years old were killed. About 10% of all French war dead were from Verdun.
The French most likely lost slightly more than the Germans. Of these, 300,000 were killed, which is about 1 death for every minute of the battle. Alistair Horne said, “Verdun was the First World War in microcosm an intensification of all its horrors and glories, courage and futility.” The French were bled white, but so were the Germans. Over a 299-day-period, there were 1 million total casualties. The Battle of Verdun-fought from February 21-Decemin the Western Front of France-was horrifying and hellish even by the standards of World War One.
